Driving a taxi is one of the few ways that someone can earn a livable wage in Cuba. Speaking to taxi drivers during a trip, one realizes that the driver is often a former engineer or even doctor - someone highly educated who needed to drive a taxi to earn a better salary. While driving a taxi is lucrative, it also involves long waiting periods in tourist areas. Drivers sitting outside their cars is a common sight in tourist parts of Havana.
